To those who think so, how is Atheism a religion?

  • "Religion is a set of beliefs and practices, often centered upon specific supernatural and moral claims, often codified as prayer, ritual, or religious law."

"Atheism, as an explicit position, can be either the affirmation of the nonexistence of gods, or the rejection of theism"

*blink* Where do you see the resemblence?

Atheism does no need faith. It needs nothing, just the disbelieve is a higher being, which itself lacks evidence and gives us no reason to believe in it.

  • Atheism is a platform for God despisers, post the disbanding of blasphemy laws, as pawns of the Devil to rise up against God and his house of religion, with no though or concern for the moral pastoral welfare of innocents.

  • atheism DOES need faith. if there is no God, you have faith in yourself.
if there is no Universal God, then you become your own God.

  • The idea that there is no God or Higher power can't be proven anymore than those who say there is such a power. To affirm a position that can't be proven is to exercise faith. there is no demand that any supernatural claims or prayers must be included in ones faith just a belief in an unprovable position on how the world cane the universe as a whole for that matter came to be.. You have your faith, I have mine.. As for me I remain IHS Jim

  • The definition of religion is:

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe

  • I can't answer all your questions, but I do think this is an interesting topic.

I will say that "faith" is needed for atheism as well as theism. Faith is another term for believing something to be true that you can't possibly know for certain. The average atheist is not an evolutionary biologist, or a astrophysicist, or a theologian (obviously). So, an average atheist HAS FAITH in the writings/teachings of these other people. Now it may be faith that is more grounded in reality than say, faith in a purple goddess teddy bear creator, but no one can avoid having some level of faith.

  • Man is a creature of belief and faith. Whatever makes up those two, that is a religious system. So to believe in no God is still a belief system.

  • Keep going with the definitions, there is more.

Atheism has a creed. "The Atheist Creed" http://www.atheists.org/Atheism/

Atheism has churches. EDIT - More than one my dear, it isnt just the one, do some research.

    http://www.acfnewsource.org/religion/ath...

Atheism has dogma. EDIT - Look up the definition and read Dawkins, there's as much dogma there as any religious text.

Atheism has denominations (true and other) EDIT - Many levels of belief and different rites and dogma.

Atheism has fundies EDIT - Please look up the defintion of a religion, fundies are indicative of the ferver needed for a religion.

Atheisim has faith - (Abiogenesis or Panspermia need faith)

Its all there whether or not you agree, it is all there and atheism is a religion.

  • true and most people who claim to be athiest arnt cause they belive in god or devil

  • If you don't beleive in God, what DO you beleive in?

The person that believes in nothing is useless -- a doormat, a "whipping boy", someone unable to stand up for his or her self. Why? Because they have no basis to form a belief to support.

So the typical atheist will substitue either science (and math) or humanism for their beliefs. But science proves nothing. It only shows us HOW things work. Science cannot tell us WHY things are as they are. Science can only show us that if something gets "out of whack" things start to fall apart. That's why physicists are still looking for The Universal Theory of Everything.

Math is no help. Math is a "foreign language" invented by man in order to describe that which remains undescribable. Again, it can tell us HOW things are -- math can describe planetary orbits and genetic codes and national debts -- but it can never tells us WHY those things are as they are.

Humanism is just another set of beliefs, but make an attempt at the WHY. The central figure of humanism is humans. Basically put, the whole universe is here for our benefit. Everything is here to promote humans -- we just need to get there to use it. So we invented carts and boats and automobiles and airplanes and spaceships.

And the humanist gets extremely frustrated when s/he doesn't understand WHY things don't go as expected. Many have the idea that the universe is there for me, and I - me and myself - am the most important one in it. When this lie is exposed (and it is quickly and easily exposed) the humanist gets frustrated.

But the religious person puts his belief in a higher power. With God, science and math still work, but there is no pressure on the WHY. God will provide that. Science, then, becomes a method to find out HOW God did it, and math is the descriptive language we use to describe it's minute details. but GOD tells us WHY He did it.

And with faith in God, there is no longer any frustration when things don't work. We know WHY they don't work -- there is sin and evil in the world, whose purpose it is to upset that which science and math describes.

So, the atheist MUST beleive in something, but they by definition miss half the possible answers, and haven't aclue as to WHY things work as they do.

Seems to me that it take MORE faith to beleive in something that you only half understand. . .

  • Sorry, am thick, but do not understand the question/point here?

  • you like chocolate donuts. i like boston creme. she likes crullers. they're all baked goods, no matter what you call them. call it what you want. it is what it is.

  • I agree with everything except for some of the last part. Technically for atheism you need a reason to not believe in a higher being. In our case, it's science.

Everything else you said is 100% true and I agree with you bro.

  • A person who choses nothing still chooses.

Not that I necessarily think that athiesm is a religion per se, though I do believe that it would qualify as a belief in several respects.
