Reading everyday equivalent to college degree?
I'm not sure where she got that statistic from. Do you know the data source?
you can learn a lot by reading your whole life. But a degree is not just reading.
which still doesn't make sense. because i could blow hours reading tabloid trash (websites) which is very different from taking ten minutes out of my day to read a scientific paper.
my english teacher's reading level was worse than the average when he entered college. Then he started reading more, and found joy in it. just because you went to school doesnt make you a genius. My mom graduated from duke and still seems like an average person (not saying shes dumb).
But now, my english teacher is one of the smartest people i know. reading does alot more for you than people realize. But you have to read continuously. not just the 3 or 4 books they give you to read for school. You'll develop a large base of common knowledge.
Im not sayin that the statistic is accurate. what im saying is that a piece of paper (degree) shouldnt give someone more credibility than a person who has, in a way, self educated.
also playing catch in the yard gets you ready for the NFL
Economic and social history degree (my degree hopefully :]) vs. reading... er nuh!!
Its not equivalent at all! An employee is going to employ somebody with a degee and would not choose somebody who read everyday, but didn't have a degree!!
Maybe if you had a reading degree though.... :p
