R&P: Has this ever happened to you.....?

  • Alright...someone once gave me an incredibly long list of Led Zeppelin song reccomendations of their lesser-known work to listen to.

    And, I loved them all.

But, you see, before I had heard any of those songs, I thought all Led Zeppelin played was Stairway To Heaven, Kashmir, Black Dog, When The Levee Breaks type music.

But, I heard all those Zeppelin songs, and I realized how much more of a band they were. What different sounds they have, that I would have never guessed would've come from them after *just* listening to their greatest hits. And that you would have never been able to tell what's under the surface of Led Zeppelin.

..The same thing happened to me for Pink Floyd over the weekend. It's made me appreciate and love both bands incredibly much more.

...Has this ever happened to you before?

  • Yeah, I totally know the feeling! My sister actually did this for me when I asked her what Beatles songs I should put on my iPod, and she wrote down a whole long list of really great Beatles songs. I mean, all their songs are great right?? but she had me add the great Beatles songs that aren't over-played on the oldies station like Revolution, Here Comes The Sun, Something, Because, etc...actually we just took songs from some of our Beatles CDs so that it would be easier=) and my whole iPod is Beatles songs!! Hope I helped!!

  • Yeah, with The Velvet Underground.

  • Yes, with the Doors, and the Beatles.

  • yeah, a long time ago it was the Rolling Stones.

  • Hmm, I wonder who that could have been, beatles maniac...

Actually, that's what happened to me with Led Zeppelin, too. I'd gotten a few of their songs a few years ago... Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir, Black Dog, Fool in the Rain, Rock & Roll, etc. and listened to a couple songs... mostly Fool in the Rain and Over the Hills and Far Away. So anyway, I didn't really give them much thought. Then I happened to hear Dazed and Confused and When the Levee Breaks (I know both of those are very popular, too, but not as much as the ones I originally had), and I really liked them, so I just ended up acquiring every studio album. I didn't listen with purpose really, I just played the songs randomly... like, oh that's an interesting title, I'll listen to that. It was a very strange thing to realize they had songs like That's the Way, Down By the Seaside, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, etc. I remember one instance... I was watching my neighbor's dog, and Carouselambra came up on shuffle... I was like what on earth is this? I was literally in disbelief that it was Led Zeppelin... but it was a pleasant surprise. They're not my favorite band just for Good Times Bad Times...

  • Yeah, but it wasn't that fast. I heard a couple of Weezer songs and I liked them, so I went to see what their best rated album was and I bought It (The Blue Album). Then I kept on doing that day by day. Now, I have over 100 Weezer songs on my ipod, and Rivers Cuomo songs, which are pretty similar.

  • Actually yes. Lynyrd Skynyrd. I thought all they did was Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama and Simple Man. But when I really started listening to them I found a diamond in the dirt. Love that feeling

  • All the time. Sometimes a just don't listen to it cuz i'm discovering new music. Then i stumble upon it again in a shuffle, and love it again. And i gain much more respect for them.

  • Yes.... I never realy liked the Beatles all that much, but then when the Traveling Wilburys came out, I got into it because I dug Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. As a result, I gave George Harrison's solo music a chance, and I found that I really liked it a lot. Still not a big beatle Fan, but I dig George's 70's stuff

  • Yes. The earliest Springsteen, and Greatful Dead.

  • Over the summer for me with Pink Floyd,
I only had about 50-or-so songs of their on my computer, so I looked up ALL their albums and even some some bootleg, and downloaded about 100 in a night. I now have WELL over 150 songs of theirs on my iPod. I have listened to each AT LEAST 5 times. INCLUDING Echoes.

  • yeah i know the feeling

when i first got into classic rock it was 2 years before i got into Zeppelin i liked Stairway and Black Dog but that were the only songs i knew of but then i got a hold of my dad's Physical Graffiti album and heard Kashmir it changed my life forever man then i started borrowing all his Zeppelin albums and now they are my favorite band

i went from knowing 2 songs to having over 4.5 hours of their music on my computer

  • definitely and truly. it's terrific when you find some music for a band you previously liked but thought were way overrated for a couple songs. it just makes the band so much better. like you know something about the band that no one else knows. you know?
