For a new job, what is considered "proper I-9 form documentation"?

  • I start a new job on Monday. I was asked to bring I-9 documentation. I have no idea what this is! Can you please help me?

  • The documents you are eligible to show depends on your situation. You don't say if you're a US citizen, a visa holder or a green card holder.

You're going to be asked for a document that proves your identity and a document which proves your eligibility to work, or a single document that proves both.

Like I say, the actual document or combination of documents depends on your circumstance, but as long as you have valid documents for your circumstance the employer cannot specify which documents they want to see (your employer can't ask to see your green card if you have a valid drivers license and social security card without employment restrictions, for example).

For a list of the documents which can be shown to an employer to meet the requirements of the I-9, see the last page of the document linked below.

If you edit your question with what your immigration status is, I'd be able to give you a more direct answer.

  • You should bring either a passport, or your drivers license AND social security card. You can used a certified birth certificate in place of a ss card.

  • Your passport or driver license/State ID and social security card should be good enough. It is just asking you that you are eligible to work in the US.
A person like me who is waiting for my permanent residency has a special working permission from INS. So I am allowed to work in the US.
