Atheists, why are you here?

  • I respect you and don't mean to offend you.

The section of R & S is meant only for those who believe in God because
    1) Religion is obviously related to God.
    2) Spirituality contains the element of the Holy Spirit. All religions like Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam agree to it.

Therefore, this section is not meant for you. Why don't you atheists go some place else or make your own section titled "ATHEISTS".

  • Do you feel threatened? Is your belief not strong enough to withstand debate. Spirituality is the belief in spirit (animating or vital principle of person or animal - as per the Oxford dictionary), not specifically the holy spirit. One can be spiritual without being religious, and usually far more open minded for being so. Over the centuries how many wars have been fought in the name of atheism?

  • I am not an atheist but I am offended by your attitude. Many years ago, people were saying the same thing to the Jews and the Catholics and the African Americans. When will we grow enough in this country to not ask these bigoted questions.
Everyone is welcome here. Maybe you should rethink your attitude.

  • atheists, I've realized, are offended by Christianity for one reason or another so they go to the religion and spirituality section and voice their opinion. this doesn't happen in other sections because culturally, being an atheist is a recent trend

  • erm pardon me? buddhist are atheists... your whole question is flawed....

  • Clearly you are wrong. This section is meant to discuss religion and spirituality. Just because you are not religious or spiritual does not mean you don't have an opinion on the topic and should not be allowed to share it. I don't play football or basketball but I still have an interest and like to share my opinions. =)

  • people can write to whichever section they want, why dont you make us?

  • because there's not a sign on the door saying 'if you don't love god, don't come in' when you fix that i might heed.
and besides don't we brighten the place up a little, you secretly love us i know

  • To enjoy their part in the Anti-Christ. If you are not for Christ, you are Anti-Christ, it is as simple as that.

  • because you asked a question directed to atheists

is it? where does it say that?

    1. yes and so we're not allowed to point out that there isn't one?
    2. many atheists are spiritual like buddhists, I'm not but again aren't I allowed to point out that it's bullsh!t?

Thank you for demonstrating why atheists should be in this section. Apparently we're not allowed to have an opinion. I see. Perhaps you'd prefer if we were just locked up in camps somewhere

BTW you might want to next time make use of the search function so you don't waste 5 points

  • this forum is not meant for only those that believe in god....what a silly thing to say.

anyone can be spiritual. you don't have to be religious for that.

    you forgot to mention pagans...

it's way too early to start drinking...

    bb

  • I believe some of them are honestly here to learn about other religions and why we believe what we do. I've encountered some very intelligent and respectful atheists from that group - people I would most likely be friends with in real life.

However, there's another (larger) group of atheists here for the sole purpose of antagonizing believers. It's from that group of atheists that I've encountered people who are bigoted, arrogant to the extreme, and just plain rude. They give lame excuses about how they're here to "educate" us because they feel sorry that we've been brainwashed. Uhh... yeah. They're here to provoke people. They can deny it all they want, but the evidence is clear in their questions and answers.

And, YA is not a discussion forum for religion. It's a place to ask and answer questions regarding Religion and Spirituality. If you're looking to debate or have a productive two-way discussion, this is NOT the appropriate place because YA is not set up to allow it properly. Yes, everyone has opinions, but sometimes you should exercise a little self-control and keep them to yourself. Like when a poster is going through a difficult time and asks specifically for Christian answers, prayer, or encouragement. Those posters aren't asking for your "opinion" that God is "make-believe" and that the Bible is a "fairytale." Those posters are looking for serious answers because they're hurting, and people should respect that.

  • This made me think of when I was in FFA(well I still am) "FFA members, why are we here?" "To practice brotherhood honor agricultural opportunities and responsibilities and to develope those qualities of leadership which an FFA member should posess."

  • I thought this was America? LOL I get thumbs down for saying this is America????

  • You wouldn't know respect if it smacked you in the face... which is just as well, as we don't need your respect (any more than you'll get ours).

This section is meant for the discussion of religion and "spirituality". It can be discussed by anyone..... This section however is NOT for proselytising... which is what you seem to be fond of.... so I recommend YOU bugger off.

... And Donna.... this isn't america. America is that way... *points to the gutter*

    .... damned yanks... ¬_¬

  • Sorry, wrong again. This section is for anyone who wants to comment on religion or spirituality.

    1. Not all religions believe in one god. Buddhism is more than simply a philosophy.

    2. Wrong. Spirituality does not always pertain to the Christian concept involving the trinity known as the "holy spirit."

This section is for anyone. Get used to it.

  • Because when we talk about religion in the Cats section they ask us to leave.

  • No, spirituality can be any religion or not have to do with religion at all. Atheist implies they don't believe in your God, but may believe in other spiritual things. My Atheist fiance believes strongly in spirits and has seen them, so he is spiritual, but has no religion and does not believe any God exists.

Also, Atheists are here for the same reason you'd go into an Atheist section-- curiosity. Humans are just like that.

I don't believe in your God, but I do believe in Lukaeleroh and it is spiritual, but by your reasoning I have no right to be here? Religion is not related just to one God, but any God that anyone in the human race believes in. Lukaeleroh has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit, neither does Buddism, Paganism, or many others.

Atheism is a belief, and they have every right to be here.

PS-- your name is a Marilyn Manson reference...:)

  • is it that you guys are here to fight/kill each other in the name of god & claiming your faith to be superior than the other ?
but we atheists just follow humanity.

  • Mostly I'm curious.
You all say how God touched you in some way, and now you believe.
Well I'm wondering if it delusional or real.
I was a believer because I didn't know any better.
Then people started to say why they believe, and I never felt that.
So I questioned my faith (not really sure I ever had it).
Why do you believe, did you feel something I'm not capable of doing? Well good for you.
Or was it something you just never really thought about.

  • They are here because there isn't another section where there's a chance that people care about them, or will respond to their raves other than to agree.

  • "Spirituality contains the element of the Holy Spirit. All religions like Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam agree to it."

haha, nice try... actually spirituality is all about alcoholic spirits. everyone knows that! drink!

  • We're here to stir you up honey

  • We are here to help...think of us as the opposition party. Religion is defined as a particular system of faith. My faith is that there is no supreme being or holy spirit. Also, you need to do your homework a bit. Buddhism is a philosophy and not a religion. Buddhism has no creator god and gives a central role to the doctrine of karma. The â ˜four noble truthsâ ™ of Buddhism state that all existence is suffering, that the cause of suffering is desire, that freedom from suffering is nirvana, and that this is attained through the â ˜eightfoldâ ™ path of ethical conduct, wisdom, and mental discipline (including meditation).
If you are so confident in your faith then why should atheists upset you so much? You would think that anyone who seeks to challenge your beliefs would be met with your own truths....if they are in fact true.

  • Yes, religion is related to god... and I want to try to get through to his believers that they don't rule the world. It is my fervent hope that they will stop trying to pass laws based on their beliefs (stem cell research, gay marriage bans, abortion... all of which are opposed based on religious reasons).

Banning these issues based on religious beliefs belittles our society. It is wrong.

Not all spirituality contains the element of the Holy Spirit... what about paganism?

I have just as much right to post in the R&S section as you do.

  • my my....are all the religious folks not wanting to play nice with us atheists? Don't want us to be part of your little group eh?

Maybe we just want a place where we can debate our ideas and theories with theists and other atheists alike?

This group is not meant solely for those who believe in a god or a spiritual....it is meant for those who have questions regarding religion and spirituality and should not exclude anyone just because they choose not to have a religious belief system.

All inquiring (and open) minds are welcome here.

  • Christian here...

    You're new here, aren't you.

Are you really so wrapped up into your own faith that you cannot appreciate the belief that there is no God is just as credible, for the sake of this forum, as the belief that there is one? It adds a completely new perspective to the question of spirituality, and if you are not prepared to factor that perspective in then you are the one who has no business being here.

  • 1) Religion is related to god ... no problem with that
    2) Spirituality contains the element of the holy spirit ..... you are quite wrong in that. Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism has nothing to do with what you call the holy spirit.

    3) Now, may I ask you why you often see Christians and hardcore religious people inside Gay and Lesbian forum?

  • Anyone can come on here. You shouldn't exclude any group of people. Many people are on to learn about different religions.

  • The word 'religion' encompasses more than just Christianity. You can even be spiritual without being religious. The Religion & Spirituality section is for anyone who wishes to discuss those topics. Therefore, you do not get to dictate who speaks here.

People cannot create their own sections. If they could, I'm sure atheists would indeed make their own. However, I'm also sure that the more obnoxious portion of Christians on Y!A would be overcome with the need to harrass and proselytise there.

Edit: In regards to your edit about scientists - I (not to mention the actual scientific community) am more inclined to believe and trust the research of a scientist who has no religious affiliation, since they are less likely to twist the results to fit their own religious views. The more someone knows about the hard sciences, the more likely they are to be atheist, or at least agnostic.

  • It's for the discussion of religion and spirituality, not just the belief in them.

  • I used to hang out over in the "car audio" section, but they kicked me out when I started talking about the non-existance of gods.
